Representing in various fields the honor of being the first company to bring European standards to our country, Penguen Gıda has introduced to the country the ISO 9000 management standard and the BRC ‘A’ Quality Highest Degree Manufacture and Hygiene Standard. As the first company to offer canned food in healthy glass jars, Penguen has now managed to satisfy its consumers by being the first in the country to implement the European Packaging Standard.
Despite operating on the Turkish market under its own brand for only 12 years, the company’s determination and policies of strict quality and hygiene led to its becoming the indisputable market leader in Turkey in the preserves category, according to 2007 data of AC Nielsen. Rapidly expanding its range of products of complete local manufacture such as preserves, canned vegetables, food ready for consumption, tomato paste, pickles, low-sugar preserves, food preparations, biscuit and ice cream sauces, dried fruit candies and frozen food, Penguen is currently capable of delivering products to any location in Turkey, having at its disposal a broad distribution network of eight regional directorates and 43 dealers.
Cultivating an area of 40 thousand decares and working with 10,000 farmers, 70% of whom have contracts with the company, Penguen Gıda is one of the largest purchasers of agricultural raw materials in the country.
Penguen runs one of Europe’s most modern plants in its industry and its location in Bursa offers very important advantages by providing proximity to regions with large quantities of raw fruits and vegetables purchasable for processing, ports and large cities with high consumption rates on the home market. This is how healthy and fresh fruits and vegetables grown under the supervision of Penguen agricultural engineers are rapidly delivered to the plant, processed on modern equipment without losing their quality and offered to consumers.
Penguen, uses fully automated lines in manufacturing. This is how carefully selected raw materials are processed in under most hygienic conditions to match the consumers' taste without hand contact and without additives and offered to the consumers in a natural form in healthy glass jars.
I.Q.F. (Individual Quick Freezing) technology is used at Penguen’s frozen food facilities. Fruits and vegetables processed at those facilities are individually frozen in rapid manner. Thus, the cell liquid of the product does not leak out and the product thus does not lose its nutritive value and its physical structure or natural flavor do not corrupt. Moreover, consumption of IQF products might be healthier and shelf life longer compared to fresh fruits and vegetables.
Penguen’s most important export items in canned food are gherkin pickles, roasted Kapya paprika and stewed grapefruit. Penguen currently exports to 35 different countries.
Making around 80% of its domestic sales to national and local supermarket chains, Penguen sells the rest to mid-size retailers and mass consumption businesses such as hotels, restaurants and snack bars. Furthermore, Penguen manufactures private label products for supermarket chains on both home and foreign markets and supplies intermediate products and processed raw materials to a number of food manufacturers.
Having gone public in 1998, the company forged an alliance with Deutsche Investitions und Entwicklungsgesellschaft mbH (DEG), a company under KFW, one of Germany’s leading finance institutions, in 2001 by selling it 12,74 percent of its shares and further increased the list of its shareholders by selling 13,04 percent of the shares to ADM Capital in 2006, thus strengthening its financial structure.
Penguen Gıda has been awarded the following prizes and honors: “Brand with the Highest Consumer Trust” by Consumer Magazine in 2004; Canned and Ready Food Brand of the Year according to Consumer’s Report Magazine at the Consumer Friendliness Golden Quality Summit (TDAK); the company with the fastest growing market share on the canned food market by Capital Magazine in 2005; “Golden Brand of 2006” in the canned food category at the award ceremony held by the Consumer Protection Association on 15 March 2006, the international consumer day; “Honor Prize of the Consumer Academy” awarded at the Anatolian Consumer Congress held by Consumer Magazine in 2006 as a result of a research conducted in the canned food and preserves field; Turkey’s new market leader rating in the preserves category according to AC Nielsen data for 2007; and Consumer Friendliness Golden Quality Award given by Consumer Report Magazine in the “Food Brand of the Year” category on March 15, the World Consumer Day.
